Enterprise del.icio.us May 2, 2006
Posted by Steve in : enterprise, tagging , trackbackJudging by these recent articles, among others, there’s a growing interest in what might be called “enterprise delicious.” I’ve been working on something like this for a while, so I’m excited to see this
However, if a recent discussion at Seattle MindCamp was any indication, there isn’t consensus about exactly what this app might be. So before discussing how to create an enterprise del.icio.us, it’s probably helpful to define a few things, starting with:
What is “del.icio.us”?
I assume you’re already familiar with the site itself
But there are many aspects of delicious that one could be talking about copying:
- bookmarking, both public and private - this implies some integration with the browser, whether through a bookmarklet or an extension
- tagging, or more generally, the creation of metadata - a lot of tagging is done manually, but some tags are suggested by the application, and filetype tags are applied automatically
- activity feeds - while feeds usually mean RSS/Atom, its URL scheme eases sharing lists of links via email, web posts, and now scripting
- recommendations - there are lots of ways to move “sideways” from any collection to popular or similar collections
(We might also be hoping to duplicate the active community of taggers, without which some of the previous items would not be as useful. The social and community aspects of this app might even be more important than the technical ones. Although the design of del.icio.us addressed problems with previous, failed bookmarking attempts, don’t underestimate the effects of early adoption by influencers like Jon Udell on its popularity. But how to create a community is another topic… I wish I knew more about that!)
That said, re-creating del.icio.us exactly is probably not what we’re talking about, anyway. So for the rest of my posts in this series, to disambiguate from the specific implementation of del.icio.us, I’ll talk about “enterprise tagging” and “enterprise bookmarking” instead. I’m pretty sure those aren’t the best terms either - but I’ll explain that later.

I noticed an incoming ping from here to a recent post of mine on You’re It! (tagsonomy.com) but I can’t find a link in this entry to the post in question.
It’s probably because the list of links under “related: enterprise delicious” is actually a live feed from del.icio.us, and it’s length-limited. As I continue to bookmark, earlier ones disappear from the list. I’m gonna bump that length up. I’ll also add you to my blogroll so there’s an explicit link! (I’d already subscribed via RSS last week
